The Malvasia Bianca grape
Today's article is about a wonderful fruity grape varietal Malvasia Bianca (pronounced Mal-va-ZEE-ah Bee-AHN-Kah), again from Italy. Malvasia is genetically the same as the more commonly known Muscat Canelli or Muscat Blanc grape. Styles of this wine can vary from lightweight to full-flavored, dry to sweet, low to high alcohol. It is sometimes made as a sparkling wine.
In this article we will discuss one of these newly emerging Italian varietals in Temecula Valley Wine Country. Malvasia Bianca is a member of an ancient, highly esteemed Greek family of grapes vinified in a myriad of styles throughout Italy. Malvasia Bianca is one of the most widely planted, light-colored grape varieties in Italy and the world. On the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, it makes rare, rich and wonderfully aromatic passito wines.
Whether sweet or dry, Malvasia Bianca offers delightful aromas and flavors of honey and ripe Bosc pears with hints of allspice. Round, lushly fruity flavors and a plush texture lead to a finish that is determined by the degree of residual sugar and the cellar treatment. The lightest versions offer a clean, crisp finish, while those aged in small barrels may display light tannins and a hint of vanilla. Sweeter, more opulent versions linger on the palate. Pair Malvasia Bianca with pork, rich cheeses or enjoy by itself. Other interesting food pairings with this wine are Seafood antipasta dishes (shrimp, scallops, and calamari dressed with oil and lemon) and grilled vegetables for the lighter wines. Grilled fish with light provencal-style sauces pairs well with the fuller wines. The dessert wines need only a simple almond biscotti (no chocolate please) to dip in the wine, real Sicilian cannoli or an apricot or plum tart with a marzipan pastry crust.
Malvasia is planted widely in Italy and around the world. It performs best where it gets good exposure to the sun and where the soils drain well. Other than the dessert wine variations, Malvasia wines do not age well and should be consumed quickly.
In Temecula Valley, Malvasia Bianca is available as a 2% Residual Sugar (amount of sugar left in the wine after fermentation is stopped) at Cougar Vineyard & Winery located at 39870 De Portola Road. Some of the most frequent questions that I receive about nutrisystem have to do with the food selections. People want to know what food choices they have and if the food is decent enough that they aren't going to mind eating it five times per day. I have to say that, of all of the diets that I've been on, this one is one of the most generous in terms of food choices and in terms of allowing you to have comfort, snack, and dessert type foods that many diets would prohibit. And by and large, most of the choices are surprisingly decent. But, in order to give you an idea of the types and quality of foods available, I will list three sample nutrisystem menus below. The selections will be coming from the basic women's menu, but for the most part, many of the plans (men's, diabetic, vegetarian, etc.) share many of the same foods.
An Example Of A Nutrisystem Menu: Day Number One: The basics of this diet require for you to eat three meals plus a snack and dessert. They also ask that you add in fresh sides to the three main meals. On this first day, we'll have crispy rice cereal. It is a lot like rice crispies but contains more protein. Since we're supposed to add in fresh sides, I'll add half a banana. For lunch, let's chose a turkey dog. For your side, you could chose a vegetable (carrot sticks) or salad. For an afternoon snack, a good choice might be pretzel sticks. For dinner, let's go Italian and have lasagna. The plan's carrot cake might make a nice dessert.
Sample Menu Number Two: Since we had cereal yesterday, let's have the egg frittata today. We might add orange juice for our side. Fettuccine Alfredo might make a nice lunch with a side of tomatoes with Italian dressing. I really like the new "chocolate rainbow delights" for a snack because they are a lot like chocolate M&M's. I'm also pretty fond of the barbecue wrap for dinner. The sauce on this is both sweet with a kick of spice. The fudge brownie could round out the day for dessert.
Day Three On Nutrisystem: The cinnamon roll is one of my favorite nutrisystem breakfast foods. I'm still not sure how this item only has 160 calories with 7 grams of protein. It's a no brainer to add in milk as your side. The red beans, rice and sausage is also a good choice (since I like spicy foods.) For whatever reason, I like celery sticks with peanut butter on the side. For the afternoon snack, a chocolate crunch bar (a lot like nestle crunch) might be nice. (You can have this snack at anytime, but I've noticed that many have it in the afternoon.) For dinner, pizza is always a safe and good choice. A salad on the side is a pretty common choice. Almond biscotti might make a nice dessert.
So this was three days of meals just to give you an idea of what you're looking at, but there are over 150 food choices available and you can hand chose your menu to include only those foods that you like and want to include. So long as you're eating five choices per day and adding in sensible sides, you can switch the foods around and have the snack whenever you like. I get a lot of emails from people who are asking for me to paint them a picture of what life on nutrisystem is like. I've written about a typical day on this diet. I've had a few people tell me that this isn't a big enough glimpse of the meals to give them a full idea of what they will be eating. So, in the following article, I'm going to expand on this idea and provide an example of a week's worth of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and desserts. I will also give you examples of the sides that you are asked to add onto each meal.
An Example Of A Week's Worth Of Nutrisystem Breakfasts: I often say that I think that the breakfasts, snacks, and desserts are my favorite part of this diets. Even though this is a lower carb diet, you are still allowed cereals, muffins, pancakes, and scones. For this example, I've tried to mix things up a bit so that there's a lot of variety. Here are seven typical breakfasts that I chose and the sides which would work well with them. They are: the banana nut muffin with milk; the egg frittata with cantaloupe; the blueberry pancakes with yogurt; the apple cinnamon oatmeal with apple slices; the apple strudel scone with cottage cheese; the cluster crunch cereal with skim milk; and the cinnamon roll with yogurt.
Now, this is only seven choices. There are more. But this does give you a good sampling of the types of products that you will eat. There are different flavors within each category. There are different flavors of oatmeal, cereals, scones, and muffins. What I've given are examples that I enjoy.
7 Days Worth Of Nutrisystem Lunches: People often expect to see a lot of soups here. And, there are some. But there are also pastas, hot dogs, bars, salads, and rice dishes. The examples that I've chosen are: the cheese tortellini and a small salad; the hot dog and celery sticks; the chicken and pasta in cacciatore sauce with carrot sticks; the chicken caesar salad with blueberries; the red beans and rice with red peppers; the minestrone soup with salad; the fettucine alfredo and cucumber slices; and finally, the chicken and noodles with watermelon.
A Weekly Sample Menu Of Nutrisystem Dinners: The dinners are a bit more substantial and they do offer a lot of variety. I tend to like the comfort food options, so if I were choosing for an entire week, I might chose: the Cajun chicken and sausage with fat and sugar free pudding; the lasagne and meat sauce with a salad; the pizza and strawberries; the beef steak with potatoes and cantaloupe; the bar b que pork wrap with celery sticks and fat free dressing; the macaroni cheese and beef with sliced tomatoes; and the mushroom risotto with sliced red peppers.
7 Tasty Snacks: You really can't go wrong with any of the snacks. But, here are seven of my favorites: the nachos; the pretzels; the herb snack mix; the cheese puffs; the bar b que chips; the coconut almond bar; and the chocolate rainbow desserts.
A Week's Worth Of Desserts: This isn't going to be very original, but the desserts are my favorite. I honestly can't think of one that I wouldn't eat, and I pretty much like them all. If I could only chose 7, I'd pick: the almond biscotti; the chocolate cake; the peppermint cookie patty; the nutrichocolates; the golden pound cake: the blueberry lemon dessert bar; and the mint chocolate crunch bar.
All of the meals are meant to be interchangeable. And, nutrisystem does allow for you to buy foods individually, by the week, and by the month. The monthly packages usually work out to be cheaper because you're buying in bulk and because they allow for you to use the most generous coupons with the monthly packages.
